
MASON CITY – A Mason City man was hospitalized after an alleged shooting incident and police are seeking clues in the matter.
A Mason City police spokesman tells NIT that this incident was reported to MCPD at 12:46 AM on August 17, 2019.
The victim, Steven Mitchell of Mason City, contacted NIT on August 18, just after midnight. He said he “was in the er for injuries given to me by another.”
Prior this report from Mr. Mitchell, NIT received another news tip, on August 17 at 1:37 AM. This tipster said “I heard that Steve Mitchell got shot twice by (name redacted) up by the court house tonight.” NIT is not releasing the name of the accused, but this is a male who has been in the county jail recently.
Mason City police confirmed the incident, saying “According to Mitchell, the incident occurred at 2nd Street and North Adams. He was treated at MercyOne North Iowa and later released. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Mason City Police Department.”
Mitchell also emphasized that he claims his “cell phone was taken from me without a warrant even after I told him (a police officer) he could not take it.”
Police did not comment on this allegation.
