Mason City woman once employed by police department charged with drug crime

MASON CITY – A Mason City woman once employed by the police department has been charged with a drug crime.

Melinda Severs, a former administrative assistant with the Mason City Police Department, was charged on October 9, 2018 with two serious misdemeanors for prescription drug possession. In September, MCPD administration convened a criminal investigation into this matter and placed Severs on leave. Once a violation of criminal law had been established and to avoid a conflict of interest, outside agencies were brought in to assist with the investigation.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement assisted with the investigation. Severs was cited and released from the Cerro Gordo County Jail and is awaiting a court appearance.

Severs is no longer employed by the Mason City Police Department. Because this is an active criminal investigation, MCPD will have no additional comment at this time.

Severs, Melinda Sue
