Shane Zahn posted a video to Facebook
MASON CITY – A handicapped man trudged out of the Mason City Fleet Farm store on his knees after he was denied use of a motorized cart by an employee, and the CEO of the big box store says that was wrong.
The incident unfolded at the Mason City Fleet Farm, when a man posted a video sometime Monday, April 24. Shane Zahn, who claims to live in Cedar Rapids, said “Went to Fleet Farm today to do some shopping. Paid for all my items and went to leave, was told I couldn’t use the wheelchair to go to the car. Returned all my items and had to walk out on my hands and knees. Just trying to make people aware of how Fleet Farm treats handicapped customers.”
The video apparently shows the man leaving the store on his knees as some commentary is made.
In response, a statement was released Tuesday afternoon by Wayne Sales, CEO of Mills Fleet Farm:
Mills Fleet Farm in Mason CityOn behalf of the entire Mills Fleet Farm Team,
We are aware of an unfortunate incident at our Mason City, Iowa, Mills Fleet Farm store where a Mills team member wouldn’t allow a disabled person to use an electric cart in our parking lot. While use of carts in the parking lot with the uneven terrain can pose a hazard, we feel that in this instance our team member made the wrong decision. We apologize to the customer and to everyone who may be affected.
Mills Fleet Farm has been a part of lives of Midwesterners for more than 61 years. Here, we did not live up to the values or the service our customers have come to expect from us. We should have gone the extra mile and helped the customer use the cart to return to his vehicle after shopping. Our goal is to speak with the customer and make things right for him. What occurred is in no way reflective of our values, and we will use the incident to learn and to improve our services.

u need to be completely sick of yourself and your store employees if they are going to treat people like this you should be fired I worked at walmart before and if we would have ever treated a customer like this we would be fired may God have mercy on your soul
why so many of you have no names when your commenting on wait you don’t want to be show your true colors chewing out someone with disbaltities and being hateful judgmental people
they brought out to him when he was drop off by the car. they said he couldn’t use the cart outside… yet they brought outside so the empoylees are ingorant turds and you are for not digging the story up more than jumping to assumption
If it were not for the fact that the dude was crawling along on his knees I’d say he was grandstanding. (Pun intended) Brilliant acting, well played……. the check is in the mail I’ll bet. Funniest home video of the year.
By throwing the “team member”, a.k.a. their abused minimum wage worker, under the bus for enforcing a policy that this very same CEO is responsible for? Well, Mr CS professional, I am a customer and that letter made me LESS likely to shop there! I have no sympathy for the clown in the video, but I don’t appreciate it when a low level lackey is made to take the fall.
I’m sure once he’s graduated from that high powered on-line law course, he will take up this guys case and represent him. It will be pro bono of course as he’s against corporate America. And it depends if you can get the day off from his can counting job too.
His son dropped him off at the door and an employee brought him a cart. He could have left the same way. I have had to navigate handicapped with a wheelchair for two years when I shattered an ankle so I’m not being a handicapped bigot. BTDT. But, you have to take some responsibility for yourself and not throw a tantrum because you’re not allowed to take an expensive handicapped cart out to the parking lot. That’s a policy in every store I’ve ever visited.
No, that’s just his version of it. The son brought the cart out, and the employee walked out to tell him to bring it back in. They then did this a second time when leaving. This was AFTER they told him he could use the transport chair to transport him inside to the electric scooter.
That makes more sense because stores never let those carts go out into the parking lot (for a lot of obvious reasons). He just wanted to have things his way or no way.
Of course it makes sense. There wasn’t one logical thing about this video, but everyone forgot to ask themselves what logic is and it looks like they are the same people that read the national enquirer for their news.
That’s why they didn’t show you that part, just a very orchestrated attempt to ruin a company image. These people should be ashamed at the amount of lies they have told to the media. It’s unfortunate Fleet farms policy is to not discuss customer complaints with others. Fortunately, they can’t keep us customers quiet like they make their employees!
They offered him a wheelchair to his car and he reacts like this? It’s been said by multiple people that watched this go down. He chose to crawl out of a store instead of follow the safety guideline he signed for cart use, so that he could ruin a stores reputation when the employee did their job, and still tried to accomidating him. Of course no one can defend rhemselves without being fired for commenting on this customers incident. Real fair.
How again is this lawsuit worthy? If anyone has a lawsuit it’s against the person that filmed this charade, and attempted to punish the store for being asked to follow the rules. Fleet farm, like every other company will never publicly explain this incident, because it is no ones business, but the man’s and Fleet farm, and good business practice is to keep it confidential. 10 million people have an opinion about a video of a man crawling, without asking themselves if this looks even slightly like the whole story. Good job north iowa, you’ve proved how easily baited you can be into believing anything that is dangled in front of you.
This man, and his son needs to man up and take the God damn wheelchair that was offered to transport him to his car, and follow the scooter rules like everyone else. I don’t know how many people work at fleet farm, but I’m sure it’s over 50, and everyone doesn’t need to be punished for a company policy that was written by management, and probably the insurance company that doesn’t want to pay for your injury/death claim on a scooter not safe to be driven OUTSIDE. Shame on all of you.
Help or no help in the winter you do not I mean do not do this anyone I mean anyone I am sorry if one our staff member did this they would be lay off no ur business in risk because went world wide Mr CEO I feel sorry for ur sales in future hope you can over come all.
This incident will not keep me from shopping at mills fleet farm. And what business do you run? It’s hard to tell since you don’t disclose it and post annnonomously.
It doesn’t help the fact that this happened. He could have been injured. What do they want a fucking cooking for a damn letter. How about a little compensation. Buy the guy his own wheelchair to show him how sorry you are. You discuss me .
Or he could have used the wheelchair offered to him instead of crawling out. Nah, that doesn’t make as much impact when trying to extort money from a small business.
According to the man in his 15 min of fame tv interview, he has his own wheelchair and electric scooter. IT WAS HIS CHOICE TO DO WHAT HE DID. HE IS THE ONE WHO CHOSE TO MAKE A SPECTACLE OF HIMSELF. HE IS NOT A VICTIM HERE…. MILLS IS AND SO IS EVERYONE ELSE WHO GETS JUDGED TO BE GUILTY WITHOUT A TRIAL IN THE COURT OF PUBLIC OPINION
Is this the same guy who dispatchers had multiple calls on during the winter months about wheeling around in a wheelchair in sub zero Temps ? If so, there has been multiple people who have tried to help this man but never takes the help. Not sure if this is the same guy but sure seems like it
Be that as it may, but there is only one Mr Shane Zahn in Iowa. This can be easily verified at Iowa Courts Online. Btw he has a pretty extensive record, here are some highlights:
VIOL. CUSTODIAL ORDER/PARENT – 1978 (SRMS)
DRIVING WHILE LICENSE DENIED OR REVOKED (SRMS)
COMPULSORY EDUCATION VIOLATION – 1ST OFFENSE (SMMS)
CONSUMPTION / INTOXICATION – 1978 (SMMS)
DOMESTIC ABUSE ASSAULT (SMMS) (twice)
OPER VEH WH INT (OWI) / 1ST OFF (SRMS)
Seems this incident wasn’t so much about Fleet Farm and more about Mr Zahn, who seems to have a problem with rules just in general.
Domestic abuse-committed in 1994, a second abuse incudent was dismissed after plea of guilty to the 1st charge.
In 1995, he was arrested for public intox.
Later in 1995, he didn’t think the rules applied to him, and didn’t think he had to follow his OWI suspension rules, and got busted driving while suspended.
In 2004 he finally was charged for not having his kid(s) in school. See how well he did as a parent, his son, your videographer started his criminal behavior early. A few years earlier he again didn’t think he had to follow the rules the judge gave him, and was busted for refusing to obey a court order. Again, got himself a plea bargain, and had to serve no jail time.
He still has not paid his fines for all these cases, Why? Because he doesn’t have to follow the rules.
Instead of assuming 1978 is the year of his offense, you should research it yourself, or you could insert foot in mouth.
Apparently nobody in this blog seen the fact that the dude has no right foot. That’s why he is on his knees, he can’t walk. It’s just unfortunately that by 5pm last night that the video already had 1.5 million hits on social media for the bad judgement on 1 employee. Good luck to that employee. I love Fleet Farm and will continue to shop there…
Bad judgement? The’re minimum wage retail hour-lies. If MFF contracts are anything like your typical big box outfit, they’re given absolutely zero discretion. Every time a Megaloo Mart Peon choose to exercise his judgement he is effectively giving his employer a carte blanche to fire him. Real cheap of MFF to throw their associate under the bus for enforcing their own corporate policy.
Thanks to the guy below who explained that this one-legged man made it into the store by lying to associate that policy violation had been pre-cleared with store management.
His name brought the cart outside, followed by an employee that told him to not do that again, but apparently he didn’t care, because he did it again on the way out. Don’t you people read?
How is this even a question of Imorality. Fake handicap? Listen dip shit if someone is desperate enough to fake being handicap they probably have some other underlined problem so either way. Dont judge unless you have facts. People are assholes.
Is he really even handicapped? I mean he was walking on his knees in an upright position so its not a back problem. Looks to me like this dude is nothing more than a scam artist looking for a get rich quick scheme. What a tool!!
If you see the video all the way, you will see that he is missing half a leg so it is not a back problem but a missing limb… If you can walk with one leg then please show him how to do it..
I hate companies that don’t stand behind their employees who follow their rules. They are letting this out-of-town disability activist make fools of them. Do the elderly go shopping without their walkers and expect stores to provide them? Do people with broken legs forget their crutches and hope a store has them and will bring them out to their cars for them? Good grief, buddy, HERE’S YOUR SIGN! Stores provide scooters and wheelchair carts as courtesies, not requirements, to the best of myknowledge. Next he’ll show up with 100 of his disabled friends and complain that there aren’t enough chairs to accommodate all of them at once. That’s how this guy rolls. I’d love to have an investigator follow him around his home territory to see how he gets around there. He probably actually has a van and uses crutches to get to the wheelchair stored in the back. He’s a hothead who got the response he was hoping for so he could make a scene. He got his 15 minutes of fame. Let’s forget him.
Maybe you guys need to get get the facts first before you start degrading and critizing this man. He got into the store by his son pulling right up to the front door and his son and a Fleet Farm employee brought the scooter to the door for him. That’s what he was trying to do when he was leaving. Taking it right to the exit door not half way through the parking lot. So maybe have a little compassion instead of being cold heartless asses.
And if the story is correct, maybe his son should have brought him his wheelchair instead of filming him. Then he would not have had to crawl to the car. I don’t think we are being heartless in our criticism. Looks to me like he wanted to make a scene.
maybe the guy was trying to stretch the rules a little, got in a pissing contest with some less-than-service-minded employee and ended up deciding to make a scene, 2017 style with FB coverage and all? i’d like to think thats what happened, rather than a carefully orchestrated settlement attempt.
Also to get the story correct, his son and an employee brought the cart out after the son lied to the employee and said a manager just ok’d it going outside. When they didn’t get to do this on the exit trip, they used the man’s disability to get back at the store publicly knowing the store won’t comment about the details, and all these people bite it hook, line, and sinker.
It’s very sad for someone to treat a person that way he needed the cart to carry his things out the employees could have at least offered to carry his things out
This was almost as staged as the lady trying to raise a million bucks to open a Marijuana dispensery in Colorado that put maggot larva on top of the cheese on her cheeseburger at Mc donalds last year to get a payoff. Wtf is wrong with these ambulance chasers?
Why should thousands of dollars worth of electric equipment that isn’t insured for, nor used outside for safety purposes be allowed to go outside? Especially when the push wheelchair they give out to transport to and from the store to the electric scooter is for this purpose. My mother in law who is 80, is still humble enough to take this gracious service without expecting more. My father in law goes to the store and tells them he needs to bring his wife inside. He checks out the scooter and they drive it to the doors while he pushes the wheelchair outside to get her. They are even nice enough to walk them to the car AND load it for her because my father in law cannot lift big bags of feed. They shop here twice a month for bird food and pet supplies because they are the only store in Mason City that will offer this service that carries the items in bulk. It’s hard to be aging in America, and still maintain independent living.
What would happen if this man would of injured himself on a malfunctioning scooter outdoors? The employee would probably of been fired because of the rule being broken, that would cost the company thousands.
I sympathize for this man’s embaressment, but it looks like he wasn’t willing to follow the rules, and the video was a good opportunity to
get back at a store that did not let him break the rules.
Thank you Fleet Farm, for taking good care of my wife’s parents while shopping in your store.
I am a disabilied veteran and I think this guy hurts all people with disabilities. I go in with forearm crutches and come out with them. There is a picture of him having a power chair. Sounds like he wants people to feel sorry for him. His son is just as bad for not helping him instead of recording it. I get enough attention and don’t like it.
Yeah, fire the employee for following safety procedure with a motorized piece of equiptment. I’m sure Fleet farm would enjoy the lawsuit for ending employment for an employee instructed to do their job. The company should either get scooters that can be used outside, or buy better insurance on them.
How about store patrons be more responsible for themselves and their needs. Since he returned all his purchases after being told that he could not leave with a motorized cart as a stated store policy, it sounds like he was throwing a childish fit.
the mart carts in stores are not made to be used outdoors they are designed to be on a flat level surface not outdoors where there are tip over hazards. from what I read he was dropped at the door and a store employee met him with the cart and would have let him use the cart to leave if they would have picked him up at the door sounds like he set them up wonder how much he will get paid?
Did he crawl into the store from his car when he got there and then grab a motorized cart? This story doesn’t add up. I would say the employee did the right thing by not breaking company policy. This guy should have expected to leave the store the same way he got into the store.
Shane you should be ashamed using your disability this way it makes us all look bad hope you were paid enough because you just cost the company money and they will recoup their losses by not giving as high of wages to their already under paid employees when I worked there they paid less than walmart!
Mills will be proven guilty by the court of public opinion. Instead of wanting the world to feel sorry for you, use your personal wheelchair to enter and leave the store, then the motorized to shop. How do you get around when you go where there aren’t carts. Do you always crawl around? People who use walkers, canes etc. don’t usually leave them in their cars and hobble to the store. Shame on you for using your disability to get attention. And why did your son video the whole thing? Sounds to me like you looking for a payout.
Wayne you have a lot of nerve blaming the employee for following the rules set by the corporation it says on the cart it is not allowed outside I feel that you set the rules and the employee deserves to be exonerated if he had been allowed to take the cart out and tipped it over the employee would be sitting in the unemployment office in the morning
He was damned if he did, damned if he didn’t with this press release. Does he tell the truth, which makes the sad disabled crawling man look attacked, or does he accept responsibility and take some self blame for the company.
The employee should not be repremanded. The people that wrote the rules, and managers that make sure they are enforced should be the ones apologizing. Every rule can be broken, buy I don’t expect a cashier to be the authority to overriding an insurance agreement for liability. Ridiculous.
The person who denied him the right to use electric cart should have offered to carry out his stuff for him. It is to often handicapped people’s rights are over looked
Except when the his system fits happened he returned all his stuff and then asked his son to set up the camera for his dramatic crawling exit. He didn’t want help. He wanted special treatment.
I heard the younger guy told the employee that the manager told them he could take it out, then when he tried to leave after shopping, the employee found that the younger guy lied about being given permission, and had to tell him he needed to bring the cart inside, then a giant hissy fit and dramatic recorded walk out ensued.
Where is this family’s integrity? Grown men that think they deserve to break the rules. What if someone loses a job over this? This was the most staged video I have ever seen. I get that a company does not want PR like this, but come on, grow some balls.
DAV or disability. Whoever he is funded by, will give him means to get around. How does he shop at other stores? Get around at home? If I need glasses to see, I don’t expect others to provide them for me. People are all to happy to sue and blame others. This world needs accountability.
I wonder how he got, from the vehicle that brought him, to the inside of the store. I know they have video cameras, so that would be interesting to see. Anonymous is right, 15 min of fame. He’s probably not allowed in the MFF in Cedar Rapids because he has tried to scam them there too.
There is no reason he couldn’t have used the cart to get to the exit door and then had someone assist from there! The store wouldn’t deny him that! This is 100% set up! They chose to have him walk out and film! It was the guys son that was recording! Who does that?? Ambulance chasers! No company is going to treat a disabled person as this video portrays!
They blame the team member but it is the store policy to not allow the power chairs in the parking lot. The team member was just following the rules and probably did not have the authority to allow him to use the chair.
Nice company, imposes a stupid rule, then throws the employee under the bus for enforcing it. If I was this person, I would quit and find better working conditions. No one deserves to be hated by the town for doing something they are told to do. That’s bull $hi#

AS someone who works in customer service for a large tractor implement (think green power) I say this letter from CEO is spot on.

I kinda hope there is a lawsuit, and I hope I can be on the jury. I’d love to see what really happened.
Exactly what I thought when I first saw this. I will continue to shop there for the things I need that are only found there, plain and simple.

Doesn’t he have his own wheelchair or crutches???
How the heck did he enter the store in the first place??
He was dropped off at the door after someone brought the Fleet Farm electric chair out to him.

People walk on one leg all the time by using crutches and walkers.
His son could of been nice and buy him one of those riding lawn mowers instead of taking video.
Try driving a riding lawnmower without a right leg.

maybe the guy was trying to stretch the rules a little, got in a pissing contest with some less-than-service-minded employee and ended up deciding to make a scene, 2017 style with FB coverage and all? i’d like to think thats what happened, rather than a carefully orchestrated settlement attempt.
It’s very sad for someone to treat a person that way he needed the cart to carry his things out the employees could have at least offered to carry his things out
The jackass video recording the whole thing could have offered to help as well. But that wouldn’t be as dramatic.
Rodney Havig
I am a disabilied veteran and I think this guy hurts all people with disabilities. I go in with forearm crutches and come out with them. There is a picture of him having a power chair. Sounds like he wants people to feel sorry for him. His son is just as bad for not helping him instead of recording it. I get enough attention and don’t like it.
Thank you for your service, and your humble self 🙂
What is more interesting is who submitted this BS to NIT and why? And why did NIT feel this was newsworthy? We who read this crap are the real fools.
What a dirty con artist.
I will never ever spend my money in this store ever again….I hope the employee that told him no has been fired……
You’re an idiot.
I would like to know How did he get into the store from his vehicle?
Give him a lifetime supply of diapers and Cheetos and he’ll be good to go also throwing a new mailbox so he can wait for his government check
Just another Dirtbag getting his 10 minutes of TV time way to go loser
the mart carts in stores are not made to be used outdoors they are designed to be on a flat level surface not outdoors where there are tip over hazards. from what I read he was dropped at the door and a store employee met him with the cart and would have let him use the cart to leave if they would have picked him up at the door sounds like he set them up wonder how much he will get paid?
Sad to say that we live in a world, where instead of helping someone, we pull out our phones to record them struggle.
It was his son recording him
I heard the younger guy told the employee that the manager told them he could take it out, then when he tried to leave after shopping, the employee found that the younger guy lied about being given permission, and had to tell him he needed to bring the cart inside, then a giant hissy fit and dramatic recorded walk out ensued.
Where is this family’s integrity? Grown men that think they deserve to break the rules. What if someone loses a job over this? This was the most staged video I have ever seen. I get that a company does not want PR like this, but come on, grow some balls.
Shame on him them. His dad should have raised him better.
No company is going to treat a disabled person as this video portrays!
he got his 15 minutes of fame, look at how he poses and someone is there to document the story. Suspicious, would love to know exactly what transpired
One question: Did he walk in on his knees?
shameful fleet farm, bur prolly 2 sides of this story.
