NIACC women place second; Miller places third for NIACC men

niacc_trojans_logoMASON CITY – The NIACC women’s golf team placed second at the NIACC Invitational on Thursday at the Mason City Country Club with a season-best total of 352.

Freshman Carlie Eckenrod led the Lady Trojans with an 86, which tied her career best round at NIACC. Sophomore Kaitlyn Koob and freshman Savannah Lentz both shot 88s for the Lady Trojans.

“This is a big tournament for her,” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said of the former Newman Catholic prep. “She’s excited with her round of 86.

“Kaitlyn finally broke into the 80s and hopefully she can build on that.”
The previous best 18-hole score for the NIACC women this spring was 355 at the Iowa Wesleyan Invitational on April 6.

“All of the girls did a fantastic job,” Frenz said. “Their mental outlook and vibe was excellent all day.”

DMACC was the women’s team champion with a 338 and Waldorf College was third with a 353.

Iowa Central’s Julie Laisney was the women’s individual medalist with a 77.

The NIACC men tied for third in the team standings with a season-best round of 309. Sophomore Hunter Miller was third in the individual medalist competition with a 72.

“That’s a very good round for Hunter,” Frenz said. “He was having problems with his back (Thursday) so for him to come out and shoot a 72 is very good and should put him in a positive mindset. He knows he can do it.”

Freshman Sam Steinwand was next in line for the Trojans with a 75.
“That’s a good round from him,” Frenz said. “He expects so much of himself.”

The 309 by the Trojans was their best 18-hole score of the season by one stroke. The Trojans shot a 310 on the first day of the Iowa Central Invitational on April 2 at Otter Creek in Ankeny.

“We want to peak at the right time,” Frenz said. “We are right on the edge.”

Kirkwood won the men’s team title with a 297 and Waldorf College was second with a 300. The Warriors’ Cody Rozales was the meet medalist with a 70.

The NIACC women return to action April 24-25 at the NJCAA Region XI tournament at Otter Creek in Ankeny. The NIACC men return to action Sunday and Monday at the AIB Invitational at Lake Panorama Golf Course in Panora, Iowa.
