Hawkeye Peter Jok arrested for second time; now suspended from team

IOWA CITY – A rising Iowa basketball star has found himself in trouble with the law for a second time this year and now, suspended from the team.

After being caught drunk driving on his moped earlier this year – costing him his driver’s license, but given a deferred judgement – Peter Jok, age 20, was caught again Tuesday morning driving his moped illegally. Driving without a license is a serious misdemeanor and may result in a up to a year in jail plus fines.

Iowa Athletic Director Gary Barta released a statement Tuesday.

“Fran [McCaffery, basketball head coach] and I were made aware of the incident involving Peter Jok and a moped this morning,” Barta said. “We don’t yet know all the facts, but we are gathering those today. I’m very disappointed to learn about this, especially in light of the fact that Peter had a previous incident earlier this summer. We will work through this in accordance to our student-athlete Code of Conduct and team rules.”

Later Tuesday, Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said “In light of last night’s moped incident, I’ve decided to suspend Peter Jok indefinitely from all University of Iowa basketball related activities. We support Peter, but we’re not happy with his recent pattern of behavior.

“In the interim, Peter will continue to attend summer school classes, participate in community service projects, and take time to work on things internally, as outlined in accordance with the student-athlete Code of Conduct. We will monitor his progress and go from there.”

Last month, Jok was awarded a Drunk Driving Certificate after taking a required course at Kirkwood Community College. He already paid his $725 in fines and court fees that he was assessed from his drunk driving charge.
