DES MOINES – A West Des Moines man was injured Sunday afternoon by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Zach Sainz, 29, was target practicing with a 9 mm handgun while with a friend at Badger Creek State Recreation Area in Madison County when one of his fingers got in front of the barrel while he was shooting at approximately 2 p.m. Sunday.
Sainz was taken to Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines then transferred to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines where he was being treated for a non-life threatening injury.
The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
