Iowa State announces 2014 Athletics Hall of Fame class

AMES – The Iowa State Letterwinners Club announced today Iowa State’s Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2014. Six former Cyclone greats will be inducted into the Iowa State Hall of Fame on Sept. 5 in a special ceremony at the ISU Alumni Center in Ames. The inductees will be honored at halftime of the Iowa State-Kansas State football game on Sept. 6.

The Iowa State Hall of Fame was established in 1997 and 154 Cyclone legends have been enshrined.

Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2014

John Cooper- Football
– Three-year letterwinner (1959-61) and team MVP/captain in 1961

– Recorded seven career interceptions and was a member of ISU’s 1959 “Dirty Thirty” team

– Compiled a 192-84-6 record, competed in 14 bowl games and won nine conference titles as the head coach at Tulsa, Arizona State and Ohio State

– Sporting News’ 1986 National Coach of the Year

– First coach to win a Rose Bowl with a team from both the Big Ten and Pac-10 conferences

– Coached Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George

– Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008

Randy Duarte- Baseball
– First-team All-America, Academic All-America and All-Big Eight in 1975

– Led the Big Eight in batting (.435), hits (57) and stolen bases (31) in 1975

– Ranked fourth nationally in batting average in 1975 (.435)

– Owned nine school records (season and career) after graduation

– Iowa State’s consecutive game hitting streak record holder (20)

– Played on the United States Collegiate All-Star team vs. Japan in 1975

Mike Jacki- Gymnastics
– All-American in the still rings in 1967

– Four-time Big Eight champion

– Finalist for the 1968 Nissen Award, given annually to the nation’s best gymnast

– President of USA Gymnastics from 1983-94

– United States Olympic Committee Board of Directors from 1984-92

– Inducted into the United States Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2004

Vic Marcucci- Wrestling
– Three-time All-American at 160 and 167 pounds (1965, 1966, 1967)

– Finished third (1965), second (1966) and first (1967) at the NCAA Championship

– Two-time Big Eight champion (1966, 1967)

– 1967 NCAA champion at 160 pounds

– Member of Iowa State’s 1965 NCAA title team

– Inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2009

Jayme Olson- Women’s Basketball
– Four-time all-conference selection

– Big Eight Freshman of the Year in 1995

– GTE Academic All-American in 1997

– First-team All-Big 12 Conference in 1997 and honorable mention All-American in 1998

– Led ISU to its first NCAA Championship appearance (1997) and win (1998)

– Held 13 season and 15 career records after graduation

– Had her jersey retired in 2004

John Van Sicklen- Football
– All-American offensive lineman in 1964

– First-Team All-Big Eight in 1964

– Played in the Blue-Gray Game and Senior Bowl

– Blocked for All-American and NFL star Tom Vaughn at ISU

– In a 1968 poll, was voted as one of the top-35 players in Iowa State football history through its first 75 years
