According to a report, 38-year-old Timothy McCollum was travling southbound on 310th Street in Mills County when his 1994 Honda Accord entered the east ditch and then a creek bed, coming to rest under a bridge and out of sight of the roadway.

McCollum was able to free himself and crawled onto the embankment but due to injuries, was unable to make it out of the creek bed. McCollum then started a fire, presumable to stay warm. A passing motorist saw the fire and then found McCollum on the creek embankment.

McCollum was taken to a nearby hospital by helicopter. The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the accident.
