CEDAR RAPIDS – The City of Cedar Rapids may partner with a private company to build a free wi-fi system in its downtown, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported Tuesday.
According to the Gazette, the city hopes to expand from 8 Wi-Fi transmitters to 70 in 2014 and offer free internet access first in the downtown area and then later, possibly throughout the city.
Residential customers won’t get free internet access, as the system would be designed, so private-sector companies would still need to offer that service.
Iowa City is also seeking to expand its free wi-fi area, which currently is only at the public library and just outside the building in the pedestrian mall area.
