Taliban commander taken into custody

BAGHLAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces captured a Taliban commander and weapons facilitator Oct. 28 in Tapagurghan District.

Afghan National Army special forces and National Directorate of Security officials captured the Taliban leader, simply known as Faruq, as he was traveling to Pul-e-Khumri from Mazar-e-Sharif by bus.

ANSF followed and stopped the bus. Once approached, Faruq exited the bus and surrendered without resistance.

As a Taliban commander, Faruq was responsible for planning and coordinating numerous attacks using improvised explosive devices in several different provinces, said a U.S. special operations leader. Faruq also aided insurgents in the district by transporting suicide vests, weapons, and ammunition.

Afghan forces have maintained steady pressure on the enemies of Afghanistan’s leadership, removing many from the battlefield. Even though the enemies of Afghanistan are able to replenish their ranks, the average age and experience of mid-level commanders has steadily been eroded.

Last month, ANASF killed Hussein Paiwan, a Taliban fighter, and captured Bismullah, a known-Taliban commander, in the same province.

The Taliban commander is in custody of the NDS.
