Jobless claims rise by 18,000

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday that in the week ending June 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted unemployment insurance claims was 354,000in hte U.S., an increase of 18,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 336,000. The 4-week moving average was 348,250, an increase of 2,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 345,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending June 8, unchanged from the prior week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 8 was 2,951,000, a decrease of 40,000 from the preceding week’s revised level of 2,991,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,978,750, an increase of 7,000 from the preceding week’s revised average of 2,971,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 335,320 in the week ending June 15, an increase of 2,949 from the previous week. There were 364,548 initial claims in the comparable week in 2012.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending June 8, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week’s revised rate. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,765,232, a decrease of 13,198 from the preceding week’s revised level of 2,778,430. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,101,927.

The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending June 1 was 4,533,560, an increase of 18,115 from the previous week. There were 5,818,334 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2012.

Extended Benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 1.

Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,417 in the week ending June 8, an increase of 187 from the prior week. There were 2,386 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 511 from the preceding week.

There were 17,109 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 1, an increase of 715 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 34,077, a decrease of 400 from the prior week.

States reported 1,683,962 persons claiming EUC (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) benefits for the week ending June 1, a decrease of 19,496 from the prior week. There were 2,533,716 persons claiming EUC in the comparable week in 2012. EUC weekly claims include first, second, third, and fourth tier activity.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 1 were in Alaska (4.5), Puerto Rico (4.3), New Mexico (3.2), New Jersey (3.1), Connecticut (3.0), Pennsylvania (3.0), California (2.9), Nevada (2.8), Oregon (2.8), and Illinois (2.6).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 8 were in Pennsylvania (+5,214), Illinois (+3,364), Texas (+3,007), Georgia (+2,937), and Ohio (+2,326), while the largest decreases were in California (-1,209), Kansas (-404), Nebraska (-314), Missouri (-212), and Montana (-202).
