Op-ed: Of course Bookmeyer appointees to HR Commission are dysfunctional (by Peter Children)

Everything Eric Bookmeyer comes into contact with at City Hall is dysfunctional. The Human Rights Commission is one of his victims.
Everything Eric Bookmeyer comes into contact with at City Hall is dysfunctional. The Human Rights Commission is one of his victims.

It’s Monday again; time to decipher John’s column. Today the focus is on the HR commissioners and what seems to be their inability to cooperate with each other. The new appointee Mark Stanton allegedly was to have labeled them as dysfunctional……… you think? These are appointees placed selectively by Bookmeyer. What else do you need to know?

Midway to the end John once again brings up the walkout perpetrated by Weaver, Marsters and Nelson to prevent the stacked deck vote pertaining to NIACC’s failed business plan that you are all paying for. The word is that it is a non-event, failed miserably. If it didn’t they’d be trumpeting it from the rooftops. Those three councilpersons knew it would fail, they were once again looking out for the taxpayers of this city. Why doesn’t John ask why we’re shelling out $265,000.00 a year to the museum? Why not? Because that’s a no no.

According to what I am reading here, Mark Stanton when asked what his impression was of the committee that serves as commissioners. He simply stated what to him was the truth…he said they appeared to him as dysfunctional. To me he was merely stating a fact. He was there and if he remains his work will not be easy. The long time director is sitting there and these people are pretending he is really isn’t. Not smart……the best is yet to come….and it’s not far off.

Mason City no longer has a Human Rights Commission. The people be dammed unless you are part of the well to do!

The Museum is a good example of the vendetta Bookmeyer has against the Human Rights Commission. The Mayor and City Council didn’t never bothered to look at any other budget to skim money from.

Mark Stanton is just another of the Mayor’s rubber stamp. He don’t give a twit about Human Rights or the little people in Mason City who have had to use the service the Human Rights Commission provided. Just watch him suck up to this Palmer fellow who comes across as a complete asshole.

People will now be told to go to Des Moines. What a crock. That is no service at all. The little folks can not afford the trip to Des Moines. Maybe City Hall will pay the expenses of those less fortunate. Not!

What is really telling is none of the well to do, Hospital big wigs, Chamber maids, or Mason Cities’ finest stepped up to the plate to defend the Human Rights Commission.

That says it all. What a negative image Mason City has!!

Did you NOT read the articles? The Iowa Equal Rights Commission will come to Mason City, The council did NOT get rid of human rights in Mason City they got rid of Mr. Foster. People that are discriminated against will still have a avenue to redress their grievances.

Reggie you live in dream world. You really think the Iowa Equal Rights Commission will come to Mason City? Never in a million years. Even if they did, it would only be cursory for show and some money.

You must be smokin your socks!!

You too are dysfunctional. LVS has it right, Reggie is just another Lackey.

Like I said, the little guy in Mason City gets shit on again!

“You too are dysfunctional. LVS has it right, Reggie is just another Lackey.”Why, because I have a different opinion than you? You and LVS seem to see everything in black and white . There are a lot of grays out there too.

@watchdog-don’t you just love it when Red Reggie the lackey starts trying to make excuses for his buddy Drunkmaster. Everyone in town knows he went after Foster because he promised his buddy from I.C. System he would retaliate against. Foster. Any body who says different is a liar.

LVS do you know this as fact or is this just a rumor?Show some proof if you have any.

@Reggie “Red”-Oh you know it is true. You are trying the same old game. Do you have any proof it isn’t true? Come on now, tell the truth. We are watching.

“Oh you know it is true. You are trying the same old game. Do you have any proof it isn’t true?” So I have to disprove a obviously bogus rumor? That is not how it works LVS BUT if you want to play that way, I’m game. Hypothetically I’ve heard that LVS is a pedophile and everyone knows it. According to your rules I don’t have to prove it or offer any evidence, it is up to you, to disprove it.

Hey Red, cutting the budget and shutting down the Human Rights Commission IS is the same thing.

GET IT!!!

@Reggie (Red) so you learned how to copy and paste. When are you going to have an original thought? Do you notice I have a lot of people that seem to support what I say and no one supports you? What does that tell you?

Red, you like idea of shades of gray so you can bend the rules to your liking. That’s ok for you ‘well to do’ but the little guy gets shoved into the ground while you are shading the grey for your own pleasure.

FYI: Some things ARE black and white! Right and Wrong is black and white.

What your asshole friend Bookmeyer (or you) did closing down the Mason City Human Rights Commission is just plain WRONG.

Yes, you are smoking your socks and you are not only dysfunctional but a power hungry selfish individual who has figured out how to manipulate Government for your own benefit harming the little guy in the process.

“What your asshole friend Bookmeyer (or you) did closing down the Mason City Human Rights Commission is just plain WRONG” Again you speak in absolutes.First the Mayor did NOT close down the HRC, he cut the budget to be more in line with every other city our size. We will still have a HRC, just one without a full time ,highly paid, director. In YOUR mind it was wrong. I respect your opinion, please respect mine.

Why doesn’t this community give Bookmeyer the “boot” this next time around since he is obsessively MICRO MANAGING every employee and every department in this city which is WAY ABOVE his pay grade and authority as a Mayor with no vote on City Council. His only authority is to make appointments, be the City PR person, cut ribbons and kiss babies!

I am not against the museum, it makes our community richer. What I dislike is the blatant hypocrisy of it all. $726.27 a day seven days a week goes there and no one in City Hall ever mentions it. Word has it the museum has close to $900,000.00 in their account. And we closed the HR because of money? Somebody ought to get a rope.

The two are not related in any way. Your attempt to draw a parallel is nonsense.
HR was a duplicate of the same function available from the state and a gross overspend in comparison with other towns of similar size in Iowa.
Mayor and council did the right thing on this one.

If you want to talk duplicity, let me remind you there is a first rate art center in Des Moines as well. It would be cheaper to send all those wo want to look at art to Des Moines on the bus….buy their lunch and bring them home than to continue to lay out over a quarter million each year. Less than 2% of the population are members of this eddifice. I would cut that yearly expenditure sharply.

Peter – I was talking about duplicative, not duplicity which means deliberate deceptiveness.
If you think you can get money spent on bus trips to the Des Moines art center instead of local art have at it. Trying to make an argument that money spent on art & funding for HR are not even in the same neighborhood.

They are directly related. Both draw funds from Mason City taxpayers. When in the course of establishing priorities for narrowing resources, one should examine what services effect the largest percentages of them.

HRC is an example of a direct service to citizens, while the Museum is an mere amenity.

As echoed by others, the Mason City HRC has been targeted by some leaders for three or four years. Deliberate, not assumed actions aimed at the Commission. The motivation behind the actions can only be assumed at this point, but the pattern is consistent.

Hey lets have Old Drunkmaster appoint his head lackey Red Reggie. Then they really will be disfunctional. He will fit right in.

Good for you LVS, you got LACKEY right this time now just work on “DYSFUNCTIONAL”.

@Lackey Red Reggie-You understood it so if a overstuffed shirt like you can I guess it is close enough. I was being polite using “Dysfunctional”. I suspect you are probably “Turncoat” AKA Red Reggie. You had better hope that your Master Drunkmaster never stops fast or you will suffocate. You elitist are the whole problem with this town and always have been.

” I was being polite using “Dysfunctional””LVS and polite in the same sentence is the ultimate oxymoron. No I am not Scott Tournquist but I now know who you are.

One cannot touch the Museum. It sits on hallowed ground, untouchable from anyone in power.

In the mean time, most others are operated largely on donations and investments. Adler Planetarium, John G. Shedd Aquarium, and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago for example. According to the financials I read, Government entities contribute less than 1% of the budgets. We are talking budgets between $10 million and $60 million per year if not more.

What is the local museum making from contributions and investments? Is such an entity more important to citizens of the community than HCR? Or are those behind it more important than the citizens who support them?
