MASON CITY – Mason City Human Rights Commissioner Jackie Huesman declined a nomination to the position of vice chair to the commission at Thursday’s regular meeting.
Huesman was nominated for the position of vice chair to the commission by Chairman Dean Genth but immediately said no, citing some kind of conflict with her job. Huesman works in the Human Resources Department at Armour Eckrich.
Huesman told Genth that she could not serve as vice chair to the commission, stating “With my job, I would not be able to serve the commission like I should.”
NorthIowaToday.com Publisher Matt Marquardt reached Huesman Friday to seek clarification on her refusal of the position and to explain why, due to her job, she could not serve the commission properly.
“How can you serve on the commission in any capacity if it interferes with your job?” Marquardt asked Huesman, who was appointed to the commission by Mayor Eric Bookmeyer. Everyone on the Human Rights Commission has now been either appointed or re-appointed by Bookmeyer.
“I cannot comment on that, sir,” Huesman replied.
“It just seems to me,” Marquardt pressed, “that if you are unable to serve as vice chair due to your job, that just being on the commission would interfere as well,” Marquardt said. “Can you explain that?”
“Like I said, I can’t answer that,” Huesman said.

She had to literally tell them she was a conflict of interest, because they could have never recognized it on their own.
I don’t know this woman but after watching part of the video from Thursday’s meeting, I’d stay as far away from that asshat Steve Palmer.
She should not be on the commission at all because of her position with Amour. She is in H.R. and is responsible for any and all discipline issues in the local company. She should not be allowed to sit on a commission that is going to arbitrate for or against hourly employees. If if she excuses herself she is in a position to influence the other members of the commissiion. She should resign immediately. If any of the other appointees are in similar positions they should resign as well, right Mr. Dodge?
Again LVS I agree with you. It sure appears she has a conflict of interest. If everything you said is true, she should not be on the commission.
I talked to Mr. Reggie the other day and he told me “I think it’s very annoying when a writer talks in the third person when telling of his experiences “. I think Mr. Reggie is correct in this observation.
How and or where does this article give u the impression that its third person.
Matt wrote this article and refers to himself as Mr. Marquardt. He has done this in the past, the mayor’s lunch article comes to mind, and I think it’s distracting.
The only thing distracting here is you said I.
