Woman sentenced after infant lost fingers to family ferret

KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 4 (UPI) — A Missouri woman, who left an infant unattended with a pet ferret that chewed off the child’s fingers, must undergo drug treatment, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Carrie Waldo, formerly of Grain Valley, Mo., pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree child endangerment.

She claimed to have been asleep during the 2011 incident, in which the ferret chewed off most of the 4-month-old child’s fingers, but authorities later said neither she nor her husband were at home at the time, the Kansas City Star reported.

The judge in her trial suspended her sentence but set other conditions for Waldo, including a 30-day drug treatment program.
