AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men’s basketball team bolstered its backcourt with the addition of Marshall transfer DeAndre Kane, a 6-4, 195-pound guard who averaged 15.1 points, 7.0 assists and 4.4 rebounds last season. Kane earned All-Conference USA second team honors and ranked 11th nationally in assists per game last season for the Thundering Herd.
“Having lost four perimeter players that were major contributors last year, DeAndre adds great versatility to our team,” Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said. “His experience will be a great addition to our team.”
Kane, a Pittsburgh, Pa. native, will be eligible immediately after graduating from Marshall. He signed his financial aid agreement to attend Iowa State.
“The up-tempo offense ISU runs played a major role in my decision,” Kane said. “I like to get up and down the court. The style that Coach Hoiberg allows his team to play fits my game perfectly.”
Kane made 26 starts for the Thundering Herd while playing in 28 of 32 games. He was one of just two players in Division I to average at least 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists. Kane played a league best 37.1 minutes per game, including eight complete games. He earned conference player of the week honors after posting Marshall’s fourth triple double in school history with a 33-point, 11-rebound and 10-assist performance against Hofstra.
In three seasons with Marshall, Kane scored 1,496 points and grabbed 498 rebounds. He has averaged over 15 points per game in each season, including a career-best 16.5 points as a sophomore.
Kane owns the Conference USA Tournament single-season record for points scored after tallying 40 in Marshall’s 2012 triple overtime win against Tulsa.
Kane played prep basketball at The Patterson School in Lenoir, N.C., in 2008-09. Prior to attending Patterson he won a state championship as a junior at Pittsburgh’s Schenley High School.
