Man dies after falling into meat blender at meat-processing plant

CLACKAMAS, Ore., April 30 (UPI) — The death of a man who fell into a mechanical meat blender at a plant in Clackamas, Ore., was being investigated, state worker safety officials said.

Investigators were examining evidence and interviewing witnesses in the Friday death of cleaning contractor Hugo Avalos-Chanon, 41, at Interstate Meat distributors, The (Portland) Oregonian reported Tuesday.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspectors had cited the company in October after finding machinery in the meat-grinding area of the facility was not properly locked down during cleaning, noting an “unexpected start-up of the machine” could cause injuries.

Sheriffs and paramedics were called to the plant late Friday after Avalos-Chanon was found entangled in a blender that regulates the fat content of ground meat. Firefighters returned Saturday to dismantle the machinery and extricate Avalos-Chanon’s body, the newspaper said.

Police said no foul play was suspected.
