HONOLULU, April 29 (UPI) — Police in Honolulu said they were trying to find the mother of a newborn girl found abandoned on a beach during the weekend.
State Human Services Department Director Pat McManaman told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser the baby, discovered on Sandy Beach just before midnight Sunday, was doing well at Queen’s Medical Center.
The 8-pound infant was found by a 21-year-old woman sitting in a parked car who heard people screaming and then heard a baby crying. She spotted the child in the sand and took her to the hospital, the newspaper said.
McManaman said the baby apparently was not clothed when found and appeared to have been born at full term.
Hawaii has a “safe haven” law that allows immunity from prosecution to those who leave an “unwanted” baby at a hospital, fire station, police station or with emergency personnel if the baby is unharmed and less than 72 hours old. McManaman said no one has taken advantage of the law since it was passed in 2007.
