Michigan’s Trey Burke declares eligibility for NBA draft

ANN ARBOR, Mich., April 14 (UPI) — Star Michigan sophomore point guard Trey Burke announced Sunday he is declaring himself eligible for the upcoming NBA draft.

Burke, who led the Wolverines into this month’s NCAA Tournament final and claimed the 2012-13 Naismith and Wooden college basketball awards, told reporters in Ann Arbor, Mich., he’s excited to join the professional ranks.

“After talking it over with my family and coaching staff and weighing all my options, I have decided to enter the NBA Draft,” Burke said. “I feel that is the right decision for me and my future. It has been a dream of mine to play in the NBA, and I feel excited and well prepared to take that next step in my career.”

Burke averaged 18.6 points, 6.7 assists and 1.6 steals per game en route to being selected as the Big Ten’s 2012-13 Player of the Year.

He played a key role as Michigan tied a school record for wins in a single season with 31.

“Trey’s desire to be the best at everything he does has helped Michigan basketball achieve things it hadn’t done in 20 years,” Wolverines head Coach John Beilein said.
