MARSHALLTOWN – The NIACC softball team returns to action Saturday in an ICCAC doubleheader at Marshalltown Community College.

The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

NIACC (6-8 overall, 1-5 in the ICCCAC) dropped 3 out of 4 games last weekend. The Lady Trojans dropped a doubleheader to No. 6 Kirkwood and split a twinbill with Southwestern.

“We were encouraged with our performance in our games last weekend,” NIACC coach Tyler Sisco said. “We improved every game and will always be pleased in coming home from the road with a split like we did against a talented Southwestern team.

“Our pitching and defense really led the way for us.”

Marshalltown enters the conference doubleheader 9-13-1 overall and 4-4 in the league. The Tigers dropped a 4-3 decision to Sauk Valley Community College and tied Sauk Valley 7-7 in a doubleheader on Monday.

“We are looking forward to playing Marshalltown this weekend,” Sisco said. “They are a power-hitting team so it will be important for us to keep their hitters off balance.

“We feel like we continue to improve in all phases of the game the more we are able to play.”

NIACC has played six games since returning from its spring trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C.

“We haven’t felt that frustrated about the weather because it is beyond our control,” Sisco said. “We have tried to make a positive out of it by taking advantage of the extra practice time that we normally do not get this time of year.

“Everyone in our conference is pretty much in the same boat. The big thing we need to keep a handle on is playing a lot games in a short amount of time. We want to be our best and as rested as we can be going in to the regional tournament.”

Next week: NIACC hosts Iowa Lakes in its home opener on Tuesday … the Lady Trojans play at Iowa Lakes on Wednesday … The Lady Trojans host Southwestern on April 20 and Kirkwood on April 21.
