Border agent sacked for criminal ties

THUNDER BAY, Ontario, March 7 (UPI) — A Canadian border agent was fired for allegedly socializing with “organized crime figures” and failing to properly search people tagged for extra screening.

The Thunder Bay, Ontario, border officer “maintained a social relationship with known organized crime figures in Thunder Bay that operate throughout Canada and internationally,” said a release that, along with a report by Public Sector Integrity Commissioner Mario Dion, was given to Canada’s parliament Thursday.

An investigation into the officer concluded that he jeopardized Canada’s border control by failing to follow federal ethics guidelines, Postmedia News reported.

“The officer failed to take enforcement action on these individuals as his duties required. The officer also attempted to evade the law during a police operation at a local bar,” the release said.

The complaint made against the officer was originally filed with Dion’s office May 11, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Another officer was also accused in the complaint, but an investigation into that officer did not back up the allegations, Dion said.
