Huge marijuana seizures at U.S. border

EL PASO, Texas, Jan. 30 (UPI) — Federal agents arrested five people and seized more than 1,700 pounds of drugs at checkpoints along the U.S. border with Mexico recently, officials said.

A 30-year-old Chihuahua man was arrested after agents found more than 400 pounds of marijuana in his pickup truck, the El Paso (Texas) Times reported Wednesday.

On Friday, agents at an immigration checkpoint on U.S. 54 near Almogordo seized 112 pounds of marijuana hidden inside the gas tank of a sport utility vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was arrested.

Agents working another checkpoint along Highway 70 near Alamogordo Saturday arrested two women after finding 520 pounds of marijuana in the U-Haul truck they were traveling in.

Agents assigned to a border station in New Mexico found a dozen backpacks filled with 633 pounds of marijuana but could not locate the smugglers.
