WBB: Cyclones Beat Longhorns In Overtime Thriller

AMES, Iowa – In a see-saw game that needed an extra five minutes to decide, Iowa State made key defensive stands in the last 2:53 of the contest to beat Texas  73-65 in overtime, including a 7-0 run in the game’s final 1:14. Anna Prins led Iowa State (10-1 overall, 1-0 Big 12) with 17 points in just 23 minutes of play. Cyclone Chelsea Poppens, like Prins struggling with foul trouble, had 16 points in 29 minutes. Texas (7-5 overall, 0-1 Big 12), led 53-47 with 3:52 left in the game before the Cyclones rallied.

Nikki Moody’s pull up jumper in the lane put the Cyclones ahead 67-65 with 1:44 left in overtime. Hallie Christofferson added a free throw and then Iowa State stopped Texas on its last seven possessions. When Chassidy Fussell misfired on an off-balance three-point attempt with 16.6 seconds left the Longhorns’ fate was sealed.  It was Fussell who had forced overtime with a three-pointer with six seconds left in regulation. Fussell, Ashley Roberts and Cokie Reed had 15 points for Texas.

Iowa State had trailed 53-47 in regulation before Prins converted two baskets, the second a three with 1:44 remaining to give Iowa State a 54-53 lead. Texas trailed 57-53 with 32 seconds left before a trio of free throws by Roberts and Fussell’s  three forced overtime.

Iowa State got off to a 6-0 led 16-4 after a three by Kidd Blaskowsky with 8:59 left in the first half.  But Texas, taking advantage of the absence of Prins and Poppens, went on a 15-2 run to take the lead, 19-18 with 3:32 to go in the opening stanza. The Cyclones led at halftime, 23-22. Iowa State shot just 27.6 percent (8-29) in the first half and made but two-of-11 three-point attempts.

The Cyclones held their own on the boards despite Prins’ and Poppens’ time on the bench, winning the battle of the boards 41-37. Poppens became Iowa State’s career offensive rebounds leader (388), passing Angie Welle (386, 1999-2002) during the game.

Moody had 14 points and a game-high 10 assists for the winners. It was her second double-double of the season. The Big 12’s leader in assists has posted double-digit assists in back-to-back games and four times this season.

Iowa State is at Texas Tech Saturday at 7 p.m. CST in Lubbock, Texas.
