Four UNI Wrestlers to Compete for Third at Midlands Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. – Four wrestlers from the University of Northern Iowa are vying to medal at the Midlands Championships, and the team finished the first day in 15th place.

Going for third place Sunday:

  • 133 – Levi Wolfensperger
  • 141 – Joey Lazor
  • 149 – Bart Reiter
  • 184 – Ryan Loder

Wolfensperger earned back-to-back pins in 3:26 and 1:53 over Garrison White of Northwestern and Mason Beckman of Lehigh, respectively. He also recorded a win by major decision.

At 141 pounds, Lazor pinned Frank Goodwin of Maryland in 4:10 after winning by major decision in an earlier match.

Reiter’s pin for the day came in 4:07 over Dan Argueta of UW Parkside.

Cody Caldwell got a technical fall late in the first day’s session.

Dylan Peters, Jarrett Jensen, Loder and Blayne Beale all won by at least one major decision for the day.

UNI finished the day ahead of four nationally ranked teams. No. 18 Maryland is in 16th. No. 17 Nebraska is in 17th place. No. 22 Penn is in 20th, and Purdue is in 26th. Purdue is ranked 21st in the nation.

The competition continues tomorrow starting at noon. The finals will start at 7 p.m.

Midlands annually features some of the nation’s top wrestling programs. Of the 32 Division I teams competing this year, 14 of them placed in the top-25 at the 2012 NCAA Championships, and 15 currently are ranked in the latest USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll, including: No. 6 Illinois, No. 9 Central Michigan, No. 10 Oregon State, No. 11 Virginia Tech, No. 12 Michigan, No. 13 Pittsburgh, No. 14 Oklahoma, No. 15 Northwestern, No. 17 Nebraska, No. 18 Edinboro (tie), No. 18 Maryland (tie), No. 21 Purdue, No. 22 Penn, No. 23 Wisconsin and No. 25 Lehigh.
