OPINION: Was it a $25,000 fabrication?

by Jack McCourt of Mason City –

If I read the Globe correctly, a city employee said the city’s insurance paid the $95,000 to Maria Ohl to settle her case, and it didn’t cost the taxpayers.

If I’m not wrong, the city’s insurance has a $25,000 deductible.  Which means the taxpayers paid the first $25,000.

If she was on paid leave until it was over.  Look what she got plus if a person was hired to take her place.  Add up the total cost.

I have been told that a big case against the city is coming up, which will cost real big money!

Even if Chief Lashbrook was right, his work has gotten a church $85,000, Ohl $95,000 and he still has his job?

Have we still got the same insurance company?  If we do, I bet the premium has really went up!

  1. I’m not sure what story the author is reading. My take was it cost $95,000.00 and the insurance paid this. They weren’t saying this included all the time and wages. The city official did neglect to mention the deductible but probably just a mistake not a conspiracy. Sad that it takes so much to get rid of bad employee. I wish someone would look into that “Church” she belongs to, something not right there.

    1. What are YOU reading? The police dept initiated a false investigation against the church and then got the IRS to do the same. The IRS found absolutely no wrong doing on the church’s behalf. As a result the church brought litigation against the city, and the city settled (church won) rightfully so. Your statements make you loom foolish. Don’t let the facts get in the way, right? Read about Officer Wernet on Google. Does your title of “bad cop” apply to him as well?

  2. Interesting Points and interesting article. Correct me if I am wrong but doesnt the Church Settlement and some of the same incidents circle around a specific officier who constantly gets promoted on the MCPD?
I would hate to pull over his wife for speeding.

    1. The officer’s name is Logan Wernet. Type his name into Google and this is the first hit you’ll see:

      http://www.iand.uscourts.gov/e-web/decisions.nsf/0/BB121B10FC017239862573950059AB52/$File/cobb.pdf

Read about the judges’ conclusions in regard to Wernet’s acting recklessly, disregard for the truth, false information, etc. It’s all out there and public knowledge.

The mayor, city admin, and chief of police are all aware of these kinds of facts, yet continue to promote and protect him. Don’t even try to raise a stink with the powers that be, they’ll just ignore you.

  3. This article also shows how alive and well the good old boys clubs are to this day. Loose lips sink ships. Business owners, large companies, and government agencies need to take responsiblity for how their employees conduct themselves.

Maybe these cases should have also been filed against the specific individuals that bullied, harrassed and slandered Maria and the church. Too many times the employees hide behind the company, but civil suits can be filed against the employees that were guilty of these acts too.

  4. Pretty obvious the people of this city need to start talking to the mayor about these issues. This money wasn’t given out to either parties because they just want money. Clearly there is a real problem affecting real people.

  5. I think the crux of all of this, is that our city leaders and government employees are above reproach, and can do anything they wish to anybody. Police & fire family and friends dont get tickets! That came out, and I guess everybody just excepts that.

  6. I have heard somewhere that we now have a different insurance company with a different deductible. I think it was Trout that made that statement. However, these are excellent points and just shows how much our city leaders will lie to us to cover up their mistakes.

  7. Does the author of this article know how people can do their job without getting sued? Sounds pretty impossible in this day and age.
