Big Ten football players of the week

The offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week and freshman of the week in the Big Ten for games on Oct. 6 were announced this morning. Below are this week’s honorees:

Offensive Co-Players of the Week

Denard Robinson, Michigan

Sr., QB, Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach

·         Became the Big Ten’s all-time leader in rushing yards by a quarterback after rushing for 235 yards, second-most in single-game history by a Big Ten quarterback, against Purdue on Saturday

·         Has 3,905 career rushing yards, which ranks fourth in NCAA history among quarterbacks

·         Also passed for 105 yards against Purdue, totaling 340 yards of offense to move into the top 10 in total offense in Big Ten history

·         Wins his ninth career Offensive Player of the Week honor, tied for the most in conference history with former Wisconsin running back Ron Dayne

·         Last Michigan Offensive Player of the Week: Denard Robinson (Sept. 10, 2012)

                                         

Carlos Hyde, Ohio State

Jr., RB, Naples, Fla./Naples

·         Rushed for 140 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries in Ohio State’s win over nationally ranked Nebraska on Saturday night

·         Became the first Buckeye since Eddie George in 1995 to score four touchdowns in a game

·         Scored on touchdown runs from one, one, seven and 16 yards to help the Buckeye offense to 63 points, tied for the second-most points by a Big Ten team this season

·         Wins the first Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award of his career

·         Last Ohio State Offensive Player of the Week: Braxton Miller (Sept. 17, 2012)

 

Defensive Player of the Week

Gerald Hodges, Penn State

Sr., LB, Paulsboro, N.J./Paulsboro

·         Finished with 11 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, in Penn State’s victory over Northwestern on Saturday

·         Part of a Penn State defense that held Northwestern to season lows in total yards (247), first downs (14) and rushing yards (112)

·         Recorded two pass breakups and a forced fumble, which came with less than one minute left in the contest to seal the Nittany Lion victory

·         Wins the third Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award of his career

·         Last Penn State Defensive Player of the Week:  Michael Mauti (Sept. 31, 2012)

 

Special Teams Player of the Week

Corey Brown, Ohio State

Jr., PR, Upper Darby, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara

·         Returned a third-quarter punt 76 yards for a touchdown against nationally ranked Nebraska on Saturday night

·         Accounted for 112 all-purpose yards by adding three catches and one rush

·         Wins his first Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week award

·         Last Ohio State Special Teams Player of the Week: Devin Barclay (Sept. 13, 2010)

 

Freshman of the Week

Aaron Burbridge, Michigan State

WR, Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison

·         Recorded eight catches for 134 yards against Indiana, both career highs and the most by any Michigan State receiver this season

·         Became the first true freshman in Spartan history to record a 100-yard receiving game

·         Wins his first Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolade

·         Last Michigan State Freshman of the Week: Mike Sadler (Nov. 14, 2011)
