Iowa City police officer attacked while responding to loud party

Vanessa Miller, The Gazette, Cedar Rapids, Iowa –

At least four people were arrested early Thursday morning – including one man charged with felony assault with a weapon on a peace officer – after the officer was attacked while checking in on a report of a loud party.

Iowa City police officers responded to 313 Gilbert St. #2022 after midnight, and when they arrived, they could hear loud voices coming from inside. An unidentified officer tried to make contact with the apartment residents, but when the unit’s door opened, the officer was attacked, according to a criminal complaint.

Garret V Curry, 19, is accused of spraying the officer in the face with aerosol air freshener, and another resident sprayed the officer in the face with hair spray, according to the report. While the officer was trying to arrest those suspects, Morgan R. Janssen, 21, came out of the apartment and is accused of kicking the officer in the head while the officer was near the ground, according to the criminal complaint.

Janssen is accused of hitting the officer in the head with the corded microphone from his portable radio, causing the officer to suffer minor injuries including swelling to his cheek and a scrape on his elbow, according to the report.

The attack caused damage to the officer’s radio and uniform, a loss totaling about $250, according to police.

Following the fight, officers discovered about 15 underage people in the unit, many of whom are believed to have been drinking, and they found alcohol containers covering most of the flat surfaces, the complaint stated.

Janssen, listed in the University of Iowa’s online directory as a student from Fairfield, was arrested on suspicion of felony assault with a weapon on a peace officer, and providing alcohol to people under 21, as he had a key to the apartment and said he lived there, according to a complaint.

He also was charged fourth-degree criminal mischief, a serious misdemeanor, and felony interference with official acts. He’s being held at the Johnson County Jail in lieu of a total bond of $8,500.

Curry, who is not listed as a UI student online, was arrested on suspicion of assault causing injury on a peace officer, an aggravated misdemeanor, and possession of a fake ID after an officer found a fictitious license from Ohio in his wallet, according to a criminal complaint.

Curry also is being held in the Johnson County Jail on an $8,500 cash-only bond.

Ian R. Zelko, whose 20th birthday was on Wednesday, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a fake ID.

Zelko, who is listed in the UI directory as being from Mount Pleasant, Wis., was released from jail this morning.
