$250K bail set for shooting victim’s brother

Jennifer Delgado, Chicago Tribune –

Chicago police said Saturday that they do not have a suspect in custody for the fatal shooting of South Side basketball prodigy Michael Haynes.

But the 22-year-old Fenger High School alum’s younger brother was held in lieu of a $250,000 bond for allegedly threatening to shoot four people shortly after the July 26 incident.

Brian Haynes, 21, of the 11700 block of South Vincennes Avenue, was arrested on the night of his brother’s shooting after he kicked in a front door of a home and threatened four people inside with a gun, Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Eric Bashirian said in bond court.

Haynes’ brother, Michael, was killed when he tried to break up a fight between neighborhood friends over a necklace – a slaying that ended plans for the 6-foot-7-inch tall prodigy to begin playing basketball in the fall for Iona College in New York.

After the slaying, Brian Haynes stormed into the home on the 11600 block of South Vincennes, saying he was looking for someone, Bashirian said. The people inside, who are all related, said that individual wasn’t there and asked him not to shoot his gun, prosecutors said.

Brian Haynes, a self-admitted Gangster Disciple, threatened the four and then fired several rounds before fleeing the scene, according to police reports. No one was hurt and police recovered a .40 shell from the living room, according to police reports and prosecutors. Haynes has been charged with four counts of home invasion and discharge of a firearm, according to court records.

Michael Haynes — who briefly played at the University of Texas at El Paso before transferring to Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa – was planning to move to his new home in New York next week, his family said.
