Utility to initiate appliance cycling across Iowa –
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – July 17, 2012 – Interstate Power and Light Co. (IPL), an Alliant Energy company, announced today it will cycle air conditioners for all participating Iowa customers. Weather conditions are such that from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today customers enrolled in the Appliance Cycling program will have their air conditioner cycled in 15-minute intervals to reduce overall energy usage.
Participating residential customers have a small control switch placed on or near their central air conditioner. Today, Alliant Energy will send a signal to all the switches in the state. The control switch will cycle the outdoor cooling unit off and on every 15 minutes. The furnace fan will continue to circulate the cooler, drier air already in the home.
For those Alliant Energy customers who do not participate in the appliance cycling program, the company is encouraging customers to conserve energy. By reducing the amount of electricity they use, customers save money on their bills and help lower utility system demand. Some ways customers can conserve include raising the temperature on their thermostat during the summer months and waiting to use appliances such as the clothes washer, dishwasher or oven until later in the evening, when the temperature starts to cool and electrical demands generally lessen.
Temperatures on Monday exceeded 95 degrees and are forecasted to again exceed 95 degrees on Tuesday. Because of this heat, Alliant Energy forecasts heavy electrical usage, which could result in a peak in energy demand across its service territory.
Alliant Energy does not expect to reach the record peak demand of 3699 megawatts set on July 18, 2011. In addition, it is not expected that there will be a shortage of energy supply, nor reliability issues for customers. However, a reduction in usage of electricity during the period of peak demand will ease the burden placed on the utility’s system by growth in peak demand and may help delay or reduce the size of future rate increases.

Read this link all of you Alliant supporters…How many of YOU got a 54.7% increase in your pay??? Alliant’s CEO did…to the tune of $5,200,000.00 This info is from 2010, so imagine how much the pay has increased since then!!
Now, how does the current natural gas rate increase sound. Don’t ever think Alliant is on your side. It’s all about the money for the executives. Contact the IUB and the Office of Consumer Advocate and tell them you are tired of paying for Alliant’s financial fiascos and mismanagement!!!
CHECK OUT THIS WEBSITE FOR PROOF!!!

You think the $$ is outrageous…if you only knew the $$ the flushed down the toilet on a daily basis. They have no accountability for their budgets…why would they need more $, ask the rate payers to dump more out. I know first hand how the execs flush down $$ with their own stinky dumps.
SOLIDARITY FOREVER!
AE bites.
I thought I read somewhere they were going through a mandatory mangement audit…something that the office of consumer affairs was making them do b/c they were so shady…does anyone know about that??
They are going through a management audit, you can bet your bottom dollar the auditors are only seeing favorable information. From what I read, the IUB didn’t like how the money was handled so wastefully on some large dollar projects. Alliant is a shady company at the expense of its customers.
Matt – Can you do a story on what the lastest is on this management audit? The IUB demanded the audit, so there has to be some updates out there.
I called Alliant over 2 months ago and asked to have the auto cycler installed and they still have not shown up to do it so I guess they are really not to interested in conservation. If we conserve and they lose profits they will just raise their rates to offset it. They SUCK.
You are exactly right, LVS. Alliant tries to act like they care about their customer’s bills, but they don’t. As soon as the executives and shareholders are making enough cash, Alliant will jack our rates up. They only care about the top dogs, and not us. I know someone who works at ALliant, and I hear about the waste of money. You know its bad when thier own employees say that.
Geez. Alliant is trying to give you customers some suggestions on how to lower your electric bills and you get nasty at them? They are trying to reduce their own profits, for cripes sakes. Do you have the automatic cycler on your a/c? Do you have a programmable thermostat? Are you doing what you can to help yourself or do you just like to complain about a company that makes a profit? Alliant does a food job of providing reliable service without brownouts. Be glad you don’t live in California.
I agree. It does reduce their profits if we conserve, but then they ARE in the process of requesting a rate hike. So they usually make it up somewhere.
I do have the cycler on my AC and I have a programmable thermostat. I’m in a townhouse & just received my bill today. Only $66, so I was okay with that. I set my AC on 78 & use my ceiling fans. I also have the temp on my water heater set a little lower. I really am trying to do what I can. Too many others aren’t, though.
Alliant is REQUIRED to do conservation projects/announcements by Iowa Utilities Board. It is MANDATORY by the gov’t. If it weren’t for that regulation, they wouldn’t give a crap.
i urge alliant energy to piss up a rope
As do I.
