From Iowa Rep. Sharon Steckman:
The Iowa House will hold a special public hearing on the Education Reform bill tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the House Chamber. Iowans are invited to provide input. You may register to comment in person (three minute limit) by contacting the Legislative Information Office at 515-281-5129. Written testimony can also be submitted at lioinfo@legis.state.ia.us.
Some consensus has been reached on a key provision of the bill which provides for competency-based education, a newer concept in teaching that allows students to learn at their own pace, and then move on once they have mastered specific concepts and skills. The House version creates a taskforce with representation from 28 districts that will have the responsibility for building guidance and resources.

Quit the coddling. We already have a way for kids to learn at their own pace, it’s called failing! If a kid can’t keep up with the learning he or she fails and has to take the class over the next year, that is their pace. Everyone needs to grow up and take on responsibility for themselves, kids and adults alike, even politions!
