Several block parties were held in Mason City over the weekend.

“Having a neighborhood block party is the best way to get to know your neighbors, your local government representatives and your community police officers,” according to Chris Watts, chair of the Georgia Hanford Neighborhood Association. “Most importantly, they are great ways to increase safety and to build a sense of community in your neighborhood.”

Mason City’s Block Party Weekend is traditionally the third weekend in August.

Watts helped organize his neighborhood’s block party, which was held for the 11th straight year.

Neighbors showed up at 22nd Street park in SE Mason City to share food and stories. Each neighbor told where they live and how long they have been there.

Watts told the neighbors about the new lighting going in at the park and other neighborhood developments.

For next year’s block parties, kits are available at City Hall with suggestions on how to start organizing a party, good ideas for your party, helpful reminders, a sample invitation, and much more.
