SIOUX CITY – A Northern Iowa man has been sentenced to over 5 years in federal prison for possession of child pornography.

Marcus Urelius (pictured, above), 36, from Farnhamville, Iowa, was sentenced May 15, 2023, to 63 months in federal prison for Possession of Child Pornography.

At the hearing, evidence established that between April 2021, and January 2022, Urelius used an Internet-based, peer-to-peer (P2P) network known as “Freenet” to knowingly receive visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Urelius was sentenced in Sioux City by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand to 63 months’ imprisonment. He was also fined a total of $20,000 and, given his substantial net worth, ordered to pay $9,500 for the costs of his court-appointed counsel. Urelius was also ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution to the victims. Urelius must also serve a 5-year term of supervised released following the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims. The case was investigated by the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Division of Criminal Investigation and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kraig R. Hamit.
