More lane restrictions U.S. 18/U.S. 218 near Floyd begin tomorrow

BRITT, Iowa ñ Aug. 23, 2011 ñ Concrete pavement work at the intersection of U.S. 18 and U.S. 218/Floyd County Road T-44 near Floyd will require the closure of the median between the north- and southbound lanes beginning Wednesday, Aug. 24, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Britt construction office. The inside lanes in both directions of U.S. 218 will remain closed.

Southbound U.S. 218 traffic between Osage and Floyd will be detoured using Iowa 9 at Osage, and then south on Floyd County Road T-38 to U.S. 18/Iowa 27 west of Floyd.

During this construction project the speed limit will be lowered from 65 mph to 55 mph with extra traffic enforcement in the construction zones. A 14-foot width lane restriction will be in place in the open lanes. In an effort to reduce congestion in the area of the intersection, the Iowa DOT is advising motorists to consider using alternate routes to avoid this intersection.

This project is expected to be completed mid-September.

The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations can more than double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles and wear seat belts.|
