National Night Out event held in East Park

MASON CITY – The annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event was held in East Park near the band shell Tuesday evening.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, and co-sponsored locally by the Community Policing Advisory Board, and the Mason City Police Department. It is supported in part by Target Stores and the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Awareness.

It was a beautiful night, the humidity had died down and there was a slight breeze making walking around the park enjoyable. Many people showed up to socialize and have fun with their children.

Kids had fun with hockey, a balloon slide, a dunk tank, a DJ, learning karate and of course, a clown. There was a long, tumble balloon where kids could use up energy hopping, running and tumbling and prizes.

There was also some things to learn, for everyone. Crimestoppers, cert, child safety seat procedures. Many police officers were on hand to answer any questions.

There were booths about the Mason City Dog Park, the Civil War and free hot dogs, chips, and pop.

National Night Out in Mason City is an annual event on the first Tuesday of August, that involves all segments of the community to build a healthier, safe community; generate support for anti-crime/ anti-drug programs and strengthen police/community relations.
