The neighborhood was congested with road work equipment, but the Firefighters made due and was able to put the fire out. Because of the amount of smoke, the firefighters needed oxygen tanks to enter the house.

There were four people sleeping in the house when it started on fire. Chrissy, the mother said, “I had just taken my son to work at Culvers and I came back to this. I went in and had to wake everybody up. It seemed like it started in the back, in the TV room.” Fire Marshall was on the scene and cause is under investigation.

When asked if they had any pets, the son answered, “We have four dogs, which we got out, but we couldn’t find the two cats.” They were still missing. The dogs were safely in Chrissy’s truck, but very hot, “They need water so bad,” Chrissy said barely able to hold back her tears.

Julie Perrott, a neighbor a couple houses down, heard that Chrissy’s dogs needed water. She grabbed a milk jug full of water and a bowl and took it to Chrissy. The dogs were so hot that Julie said, “I have a fenced in yard, you can bring them to my place if you’d like.” The dogs were happy to be out of the truck and that they had food and water.

Crystal Shellhart, a former neighbor to Chrissy, drove to the site as soon as she heard the address. “My grandma lives right over there. I was worried that it was her, but found out that it was my friends house. I work at Holiday Inn and Suites and have made arrangements for Chrissy’s family to stay there. We are also checking with Red Cross to see if we can get some vouchers for them.”

The fire was out and the dogs were safe. The cats haven’t been found and now the uncertainty of what to do was on the faces of the family.
