The fire was at 1608 South Pennsylvania Avenue, and started at about 11:10 p.m.
Another witness that lives in the apartment house said “an older man was able to get out on his own. The smoke was so thick, it was scary. Everyone seems to be OK.”
One man said his daughter lives at the building but wasn’t home. She called him to get to the scene and see what was going on.
A ladder to the southeast front window was propped up by firefighters. Smoke damage could be seen a the top of the window. A burning smell was in the air near the scene, and rescue personnel were still milling around making sure there was no more danger.
