Terry E. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds today announced they will host the annual Food bank of Iowa fundraising luncheon on the west steps of the Capitol next Friday, July 8, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All state employees, their friends and families, and the general public are invited and encouraged to attend.

“We are pleased to announce this annual luncheon to benefit the Food Bank of Iowa,” said Branstad. “I look forward to hosting state employees, the public and their friends and family in raising money for the Iowa Food Bank and collecting canned goods for needy Iowans.”

The Office of Governor Terry E. Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds have partnered with Maid-Rite, Atlantic Bottling and Hy-Vee for this event.

“During the summer months it is easy for us to forget about those less fortunate in Iowa,” said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds. “The fact is that there are hungry Iowans all year round, not just during the holidays. 1 in every 9 Iowans are food insecure and 1 in every 6 Iowa children are food insecure. I look forward to hosting this event, along with our great corporate sponsors, to raise awareness and help the Food Bank of Iowa feed Iowa’s hungry.

All attendees are encouraged to purchase a lunch for $5, with all proceeds benefiting the Food bank of Iowa. In addition, attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable canned goods to donate to the Food Bank of Iowa. The Food Bank of Iowa’s current needs include: canned protein goods like tuna, peanut butter and chicken, personal hygiene items like deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes, toilet paper, paper towels, Kleenex, cold cereal and canned fruits and vegetables.
