Latham says fiscal responsibility a key to job growth

Congressman Latham, speaking at the Des Moines Partnership’s annual congressional briefing on Capitol Hill, told those in attendance that Congress must get serious about fiscal responsibility before a long-term economic recovery can get off the ground.

“The private sector has to have certainty before our economy can thrive again,” Congressman Latham said after his remarks. “Families, businesses and farms need to know what their tax liabilities and federal regulatory burdens will be before they can plan ahead, invest in our communities and create jobs.”

He said out-of-control federal spending and record deficits are creating the uncertainty plaguing Iowa businesses and farms. But he said Washington has turned a corner in recent months, with leaders from all parties agreeing that it’s time to rein in spending. He said the renewed commitment to fiscal restraint is cause for optimism about the future.

“There’s an entirely different outlook in Washington right now,” Congressman Latham said. “It’s a different town. Instead of talking about how much more we can spend, the debate is about how we can cut spending and implement responsible policies.”|
