WASHINGTON, D.C. – Fewer than one in four Americans (24%) now believe the Bible is “the actual word of God, and is to be taken literally, word for word,” similar to the 26% who view it as “a book of fables, legends, history and moral precepts recorded by man,” a Gallup poll says.
According to Gallup, this is the first time in its four-decade trend that biblical literalism has not surpassed biblical skepticism. Meanwhile, about half of Americans — a proportion largely unchanged over the years — fall in the middle, saying the Bible is the inspired word of God but that not all of it should be taken literally.
From the mid-1970s through 1984, close to 40% of Americans considered the Bible the literal word of God, but this has been declining ever since, along with a shrinking percentage of self-identified Christians in the U.S.
Nonwhites, adults aged 50 and older, and adults with no college education all lean toward believing the Bible is the actual word of God rather than stories and history recorded by man.

I believe in the bible and do take it literal. People are so screwed up they no longer believe the truth when it is starring them in the face.
Over 2000 years ago it was told about a “son of god” to come as our redeemer. Thousands saw, heard, and even touched him. Then those same people witnessed his death, burial, and resurrection.
All of these events were observed and witnessed. Those are facts that can not refuted or explained away as mass hysteria or mental illness.
Still, there are many today who deny truth. It is no wonder so many people wander around so unhappy and without hope.

really glad to hear that you are not letting the good book control you. I never said that there were not some good rules to live by in the bible because there is. I merely said the truth. It is a book written by men to control the thoughts of other men, and it is. Now you can say it is inspired by God and I wouldn’t disagree, but that is a matter of faith.
Well, there were many many different authors to the bible. Between the many witness’s and debates it really isn’t my faith that makes me a believer. It is the impossible miracles and prayers that have been answered that leads me on. Today humanism is promoted so man is the center of all decisions instead of God. Most people today think THEY are God. From my perspective these decisions aren’t working out so good. To each their own!
Please fill us all in on these “miracles” and provide some proof that it was God answering prayers.
