MASON CITY – Mason City’s North End is getting another new business.

Mason City Tobacco & Food is preparing to open at 1308 North Federal. This is the former location of Herb & George TV; the sign for that long-time business has been taken down. County documents show that Herb & George owner Daryl Miller has transferred that real estate property to Troy and Brandi Gobeli, months ago.

Saturday night, several persons where inside 1308 North Federal apparently prepping the storefront to do business. A Marlboro display case was in place, already, and the sign for the new business had been perched on the front of the building. It says “coming soon”.

Also joining Mason City Tobacco & Food on the city’s North End is Don Liquor & Tobacco.  This new business is located at 719 North Federal.  It offers alcohol, tobacco, soft drinks, and other paraphernalia.

Recently, city council members Alex Kuhn, Bill Schickel and Janet Solberg promised that the North End would be receiving some much-needed attention this year, to promote business development and quality of life.  At a public listening post, they said improved lighting was coming, especially north of 12th Street.  They also promised that the public parking lot at 14th Street and North Federal would finally get signage that actually says “public parking” and would be reclaimed for use as a public lot.

If they demo the old cement plant, they will not build anything on that site. Do you know how toxic thast land will be?

They can develop the pit area and the land around it. Right now they are leasing to farmers who would love to buy a lot of the land. It is true that the processing plant area is probably polluted.

they will not develop anything on or around that place, trust me I know alot about them and Lehigh I do contract work there all the time

You are probably correct, There is a lot of lime in that ground. They can possibly develop the pit area if they wanted to sell. I understand there was a developer that was interested in that a couple of years ago. He wanted to make it into a private lake. It is pretty damn cold though.

OPEN YOUR EYES..this is how they can control any real businesses that might want to locate on the North end..fill it with riff-raff and no good new business goes there.. and the council can say “they tried”…
again the lack of true business minds on this council is showing it’s ugly head.

The city needs to condemn the no used cement plant and work that area for new town houses and real development.

Another example of keeping Mason City citizens drunk and stupid.

agree

Tim Latham, Mark Lemon, Rick Mathes, John Mccloskey and Alex Kuhn need to head up or council..business minded people..

Just what is NOT NEEDED in the North End.

Stores that sell liquor, tobacco, lotto don’t just pop up and hope to be profitable. They pray off the economically depressed areas the serve that are already in trouble. Did you ever notice how many dollar stores and check cashing/payday loan places are in mason city? The blame falls squarely on people who created this situation not the people who live there. Vote out the promise makers. Stop shopping big box and online when possible. Get out and involved. What is our EDC doing for us? What is our chamber of commerce doing?

Been that way here in shitty city a long time.

Thank heaven, cause it’s so hard to find a place that sells cigarettes.

all right more liquor for us drunks to swallow. Great job north end group. Keep it up there, OH is there a building MCPD can redo for more jail space?

Woooohoooo two new liquor stores!

Must be trying to cash in on the north end drug money. New business? Two places selling cigarettes and alcohol isn’t really helping the city but is taking the drug money.

Minimum wage jobs. Sad.
