Another raise recommended for county elected officials

cerro gordo_courthouse_closeupMASON CITY – The Cerro Gordo County Compensation Board recommended Thursday that elected officials get another raise.

The board considered two scenarios; a 1.5% raise on July 1, 2015 and then a second raise of 1.5% on January 1, 2016. The second scenario was the same except the county auditor would receive a $5,000 stipend for supervising the county’s geographic information systems.

Scenario two was approved unanimously. The raise amounts to a 2.25% increase for the attorney, auditor, recorder, sheriff, treasurer, and supervisors.

County attorney Carlye Dalen will make over $114,000 in 2016 if approved by the board of supervisors.  The supervisors themselves will make nearly $51,000 if they approve their own raises.

The board is made up of:

Tim LaPointe, appointed by the Board of Supervisors; Four Year Term, Expires June 30, 2015

Dave Theiss, appointed by the Board of Supervisors; Four Year Term, Expires June 30, 2015

John Stone, appointed by the County Treasurer; Four Year Term, Expires June 30, 2015

I disagree with you classifying the supervisor spot as part time. I think 40 hrs would be a short week for them. That said, I think all the County officers are overpaid.

Sadly, the compensation board doesn’t decide by job what the raises are. From what I understand, even if the supervisors didn’t want the raise, they are stuck with that or vetoing everyone. Mary Beth, you usually have something to say in here, how did you vote?

This is ridiculous, especially since the rest of us in the real world, meaning working men and women, have not seen raises since 2008.

But they are government, they are needy of us peasants to pay them more to rule us and regulate us.

The comp. board should be elected by the citizens and not appointed by the people that are expecting raises.

I have a problem with some of these people sitting on this board. At least one can’t handle their own finances.

Enough said.

I have NO PROBLEM with the the rest of the County workers that WORK FULL TIME getting their respective raises.
It is the Supervisor’s who are considered part time that I object two. They all have other jobs and wages. Work part-time with full time benefits, mileage re-imbursement, IPERS and a HEFTY salary on top of this.

@Cris W.-You are exactly correct. This is the highest paying part time job I have ever seen. I don’t think it was meant to be that way.

Its always interesting to see how these things play out and what the public perception is. The argument could be made; as elected officials, they all knew what the wage scale was when they ran for office and therefore should be satisfied with what the job currently pays.

@Buzz-exactly.
