MARSHALLTOWN – The construction of the Marshalltown Generating Station (MGS) will create long-term environmental benefits and economic opportunities for Iowa, Alliant Energy said Tuesday. MGS is an approximate 650 megawatt, combined-cycle, natural gas-fueled facility that is expected to power more than 500,000 homes. The MGS is expected to begin operations in the second quarter 2017.
“The Marshalltown Generating Station project will make Iowa’s air cleaner for decades while creating good-paying jobs in Iowa today,” said Doug Kopp – president of Alliant Energy’s Iowa utility. “We are proud that this facility will provide reliable, cleaner and cost-competitive energy to current and future generations of Iowans in a responsible way.”
Alliant Energy expects the estimated $920 million project to create approximately 200-300 jobs in Marshalltown during construction.
Local and state leaders, including the Honorable Governor Terry Branstad, were in attendance to celebrate the beginning of the construction phase of the project.
“The strong partnerships we have with the community, labor partners and our contractors will serve as the foundation for this project,” said John Larsen – Alliant Energy’s senior vice president of Generation. “We look forward to completing the Marshalltown Generating Station project on time and on budget as construction and operation of the facility will be a significant step forward in the execution of our long-term energy resource plan that adds flexibility to our customers’ energy supply while reducing emissions.”
