Gone too far? ‘Kill Obama’ sign gets Colorado man a visit from Secret Service

By John M. Glionna, Los Angeles Times –

Colorado resident Lee Mulcahy discovered that there are limits to the discussion when it comes to political signage outside your home in this presidential election year.

The phrase “Fire Obama” is permissible and such placards adorn some yards. But “Kill Obama” is not, and Mulcahy, of Aspen, received a visit the other day from both local police and the U.S. Secret Service.

“We felt this was pretty serious — anything that has to do with the president of the United States is serious, so we immediately contacted the Secret Service,” Blair Dweyer, a community relations specialist for Aspen police, told the Los Angeles Times.

Authorities say that several neighbors in the Rocky Mountain resort community’s Burlington Ranch area called to report the message painted in red — not on a sign — but on the front of a home under construction.

The Aspen Times reported that Mulcahy, a local artist who the newspaper described as “well-known in local circles for his written, verbal and artistic attacks on government and big business,” contacted police insisting he was not the culprit.

Mulcahy, a self-described tea party member who has offered his support for vice presidential candidate Paul D. Ryan on his Facebook page, later painted over the message, police said.

But the artist still got a visit from concerned officials. Police Officer Terry Leitch told the Aspen paper that the Secret Service agent “kind of stressed the point how people’s perceptions of that (the anti-Obama message) would be.”

Mulcahy did not return phone calls seeking comment.

But a lawyer who serves as counsel for the Colorado Press Association told Aspen reporters that the anti-Obama message, no matter how blatant, is protected under free speech.

“It is a federal offense (a felony) to make a ‘true threat’ against the president of the United States,” he wrote in an email to reporters. “However, the Supreme Court has held that statements of political protest, that are not intended to (or are not reasonably understood as) conveying a serious threat — one that would cause reasonable apprehension in the target of the threat — are not subject to criminal punishment.”

Still, the Aspen police switchboard lighted up with complaints about the sign, which many people said could be seen from a local bus stop for schoolchildren. Even the head of the local housing authority made a personal call to the Secret Service.

“This is a small town,” Dweyer told the Times. “When things like this happen, people take interest.”

The problem with those who despise President Obama for their selfish, partisan reasons is they are delusional to say the least. Bush/Cheney started an illegal corrupt war, killed tens of thousands of human beings, wasted billions ( if not trillions by some long term estimates), and crashed the economy before getting out. Obama is a saint compared to the dirty Bush regime. War mongers have a different set of values so it’s pointless to talk to them about a virtuous course to follow.

Besides, going after the perpetrators of 9/11 in such a way, proved to me decisively America is NOT a Christian nation, despite what many believe. It’s actually karma that God and the Christian faith are being peeled away from courthouses and government proceedings. Not so much because the Constitution proscribes as such, but because America’s own actions make it unstomachable to continue carrying on as though we were in fact Christian. What was that about “Loving your enemies?”

if Obama is a saint then you are a saint too.

Yes, the name St. Whaco comes to mind.

St. Elsewhere

The graffiti stayed up MUCH longer than I wanted. I first saw the most recent vandalism when I arrived at the house at around 10:00 a.m. Not having a phone, I immediately borrowed my neighbor’s and called the police. I was instructed to not paint over anything until they arrived. During the ensuing 6 hour wait, I called the police twice more and expressed my desire to cover the message before the local school children returned home, and was told not to touch anything until they arrived.

I waited, and waited…. The police finally arrived, accompanied by a secret service agent, at around 4:00 p.m. They took a picture of the graffiti and I immediately painted over it.

While I was surprised to see a Secret Service agent accompanying the police, it was only the agent’s very forceful attempts to have me sign a lengthy document that I had not read that arguably shook me.

As you are well aware, I have always stood behind my actions, right or wrong. I had nothing to do with…

Let me state that I abhor violence and war. As an Eagle Scout, the suggestion of violence in this grafitti is shameful; neither I nor anyone I know did this. However, it is also a shameful cowardly act to deface anyone’s private property in the dark of night.

I believe in community. I believe in social justice and peace. We must love our neighbor, and agree to disagree but still break bread together.

Nice hit piece.–letter to the Aspen Times author who is a bitter queen from Lee…

As a member of the “TEA PARTY” I find some of these comments beyond stupid (CM). You are almost in the same class as this beyond STUPID person. When are we as a nation going to stop name calling and angery words because not everyone agrees with us. I have an aquantence who leaves whenever I come into the same resturant because I do not have her political views. I remember my grand-father, uncles and dad having heated politcal discussions then get up and have dinner together. WHAT has HAPPEN to us a citizens of this great country? Anyone know?

No matter whether you agree with his policy’s or not, he is the president of our country voted in by a majority of the people during the last election. Therefore, he deserves our respect and protection. This can not be tolerated because it can and will lead to more severe responses. Katie, you are correct that the other candidates should be protected as well.

Were they sober?

What about all the yahoos on Twitter who have threatened to kill Romney? I hope they have also received visits from the Secret Service.

Romney is NOT the president! (and will not be). Tweeters reap what they sow.

This guy SHOULD be arrested! The right has gotten WAY out of hand. Rep. or Dem., he is our president and you must at least have respect for the office, if not the man.

Joe, I totally agree with you. Whoever painted that should be arrested. It may be difficult to prove who did this, though. Unfortunately, people pull nasty pranks. Threats against Governor Romney also deserve to be investigated just as thoroughly. In case you don’t remember, Robert Kennedy was a mere primary candidate when he was assassinated in 1968. It doesn’t matter if a candidate gets elected or not. All candidates still deserve protection from assassins.

I also get upset when I watch news anchors or talking heads who do not call him President Obama and just say Obama when they are talking about something other than the election. I can understand it when they are talking politics because it becomes cumbersome, but if they are talking about news, they need to use his title and show him respect. I never heard Fox News anchors call George W anything but President Bush, but they call Barack just Obama all the time and it really annoys me. Yes, I have sent FNC an email telling them to show him proper respect.

Katie, you do know Fox News is leaning so far to the right they’re practically falling over, don’t you? They will NEVER give a Democratic POTUS the respect he/she deserves. It’s just the way they are.

Yes, I am aware that FNC is extremely conservative. There are some anchors like Hannity that I will not even listen to. I read several news sites daily that are not conservative. I try to get a balanced view. Part of the problem is that the other mainstream media has ignored so much of the bad stuff that has happened under Pres. Obama, that you stop trusting them to tell the whole story.

Katie I agree about the media. The only way to get some balance is to ignore the far right and left. Always remember don’t believe everything you read.

I bet those secret service guys enjoyed that. Were they out chasing the snow bunnies?

I wouldn’t expect anything smarter from the tea party. What a dope!
