Cyclones Sweep TCU

AMES, Iowa – No. 19 Iowa State (8-5, 2-1 Big 12) swept the TCU Horned Frogs (13-3, 2-1 Big 12) in three sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-17) on Saturday in Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones were led offensively by senior middle blocker Jamie Straube, who had a match-high 12 kills while hitting at a .524 percent clip.

“Our serve and pass game was pretty good; I thought we won that battle pretty significantly,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. “Offensively, Jamie Straube was really good tonight. We knew because of the way they block that she could be successful against this team. I think that got her really excited and she went off.”

Straube and Victoria Hurtt got the Cyclones off to a good start, each player contributing a team-high four kills as the Cyclones took the 1-0 match lead, despite the visitors out-hitting the Cyclones, .282-.234. TCU’s Stephanie Holland led all players with five kills in the game.

Iowa State’s offense exploded for a .405 hitting mark in the second game. The Cyclones spread it around on offense, with four players leading the squad with four kills each. Holland kept up her hitting streak with five more kills and hit .556 through the first two sets.

It was all Cyclones in game three, as the team jumped out to an early 10-5 and never looked back. A Rachel Hockaday kill gave Iowa State its first 10-point lead, 19-9. Andie Malloy, Taylor Knuth, Tory Knuth and Taylor Goetz entered the match late in the third game, allowing several regulars a break.

Iowa State hits the road again on Wednesday in a top-25 showdown at Kansas State. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. CDT first serve.
