ALABAMA – A bare-knuckle U.S. Senate election in Alabama between an accused child-molester and a Democrat narrowly went the liberal’s way,
“On a very personal level, I want to thank each of you for fulfilling a lifelong dream to serve in the U.S Senate,” the victorious Democrat Doug Jones said after the election outcome was clear. “At the end of the day this entire race has been about dignity and respect. This campaign has about the rule of law. It has never been about me, it’s never been about Roy Moore, it’s about you.”
Jones defeated Roy Moore, a former Alabama Supreme Court Justice who was strongly supported by President Donald Trump in this election. During the election, Moore’s past came back to haunt him as he was accused of sexual assaults, misconduct and allegedly once banned from a mall for chasing teenage girls. He fought back hard and said he would investigate the women who accuse him. He also inferred the gay people are criminals and talked about the good old days of slavery.
The margin of victory appeared to be under 20,000 votes out of about 1.3 million votes cast, with 99% of precincts reporting.
The outcome tips the Senate to a 51-49 advantage for Republicans and may put that Chamber of Congress into play during the 2018 elections.
Outspoken Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts said “We elected a Democratic senator in deep red Alabama tonight. Why? Because Doug Jones was a great candidate. We had the right message. We had the wind in our sails. And we fought our hearts out. Tonight, Alabama is sending a powerful message across the country. The American people will fight back against bigotry, hate and, yes, pedophilia – and reject a man totally unfit to serve in the United States Senate.”
Moore finally spoke at about 10:30 PM. His supporters are calling for a re-count. He said “God is always in control” and he has been “put in a hole.” He refused to concede the outcome as he quoted Bible passages.
Political pundit Rick Santorum said on CNN that President Donald Trump’s involvement in the election wasn’t enough for Moore to win the seat, and criticized his tweets and attacks. He called the election outcome a “warning shot” for Republicans and Trump’s tweets “hostile … and just debilitating.”
Roy Moore finally spoke at about 10:30 PM and refused to concede the election. Quoting Bible passages, Moore said he was “put in a hole” as he demanded a recount.
