DES MOINES – Liberal defenders of the state’s public school system bragged Friday morning that legislation to create school vouchers was “dead” … then asked for donations.
Iowa Democrats said “House Education Committee Chairman Walt Rogers admitted to the Des Moines Register that our public pressure worked. ‘We had the momentum somewhat, but it’s been curtailed. Just the excitement for this one issue has wavered a little.'”
Conjuring the wicked image of billionaire Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, Democrats said earlier that “Betsy Devos-style education is coming to Iowa — that is if Iowa House Republicans have their way. Republicans have already introduced a bill for them to create vouchers in Iowa, which would shift money from public schools to home schools/private schools instead. If approved, their plan will strip away over $200 million from public schools and the result will be a disaster — school closings, higher class sizes, and fewer opportunities for the 92% of Iowa kids in public schools.”
Friday, it seemed that the bill wouldn’t advance, and lib’s were ecstatic.
