Muslims may have been intentional target in Minneapolis shooting

Shortly before 2:30 AM on Wednesday, June 29th, Minneapolis Police responded to a report of shots heard in the area of 14th Avenue SE and 6th Street SE. Upon arrival, officers were unable to locate any suspects or victims in the area.

A short period of time later, officers were advised that two people had shown up at the University of Minnesota Hospital with gunshot wounds. The wounds were described as non-life threatening.

Officers and investigators were able to locate a crime scene, and have been following up on leads developed at the location and the hospital.

This is being investigated as a bias motivated crime. The shooting wounded two young Muslim men. In the attack, an assailant allegedly made disparaging remarks about Muslims before opening fire on five men wearing Islamic attire.

A University of Minnesota official said “The University strongly condemns any and all anti-Muslim actions or rhetoric. The violence earlier this week is deeply troubling and runs counter to the University’s foundational values of inclusion, tolerance, and respect. That this senseless act occurred in a neighborhood adjacent to the University where many of our students live only strengthens our resolve and commitment to these values. We will continue to stand with the Muslim community, our Muslim students, faculty, and staff, and with all who make up the rich diversity that is the University community.”

Investigators have interviewed a number of people who have come forward in this case and are requesting that anyone who has information to come forward.
