Meyer to take similar position in Cedar Falls

Mason City City Attorney Tom Meyer, was is resigning his position in Mason City effective September 2, has taken a similar job in Cedar Falls.

According to Dick McAlister, Director of Administrative Services for the City of Cedar Falls, Meyer will take over as the lead city attorney and personnel manager there.

The position is “very similar” to his job in Mason City, McAlister said.

“Tom will be the lead city attorney. He will supervise two part-time attorneys the city uses. One of those attorneys handles violations of city ordinances, like speeding tickets, traffic tickets. The other part-time attorney handles ordinance preparation and review of contracts,” McAlister said.

Meyer will handle collective bargaining, city employee discipline, basically serving as a human resources manager, very much like the duties his job entailed in Mason City.

Another part of Meyer’s job would be risk management, which involves being a go-between for the City of Cedar Falls and the city’s insurance carrier who ultimately pays claims made against the city. This involves areas such as employee benefits, liability insurance claims, and worker’s compensation.

Meyer begins his new job in Cedar Falls on September 6th. He will be paid $109,000 per year.

Meyer replaces Susan Stoudt in Cedar Falls, who took a position with the Ahlers Law Firm in Des Moines.|
