MASON CITY – A Mason City man accused of domestic assault involving strangulation was able to reach a plea deal and is now in jail.
Colter James Carlson, age 24, was charged by Mason City police with domestic abuse assault involving strangulation on May 10, 2014. After an initial not guilty plea, and then further negotiations, Colter and his lawyer, Richard Tompkins, were able to reach a plea deal with county prosecutors. He pled guilty to first offense domestic abuse assault causing injury. He was sentenced to two days in jail and was ordered to pay $652.58 in fines and fees. Carlson was allowed a $50.00 per month payment plan back in October but records show no payment has been made.
After a victim impact statement was read, the judge denied a request by Colter that the no contact order in the case – protecting the victim – be lifted.
Colter was caught in 2012 trespassing on the roof of Southbridge Mall, consuming alcohol, with 5 other people, including under-age drinkers.
