Margia Irene White, age 106, of Algona passed away on December 16th at the Good Samaritan Society in Algona.
Irene, daughter of Jeanette Bailey Sommer and Jacob William Sommer, was born March 6, 1919 in Washington, Iowa. She graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1937 and then attended American Institute of Commerce in Davenport, Iowa where she played basketball. Irene had a very successful basketball career traveling all over the country.
On December 20, 1942 Irene married Harold White. They resided in Washington, Iowa where they owned the City Service station and bulk plant. The couple moved to Fort Myers, Florida in 1958 where they operated another service station. Irene was employed as a bookkeeper for Sears from 1962-1982. Harold worked for the Postal Service until he retired.
Harold and Irene loved to travel. They made friends all over the United States.
After Harold’s passing, Irene moved to Algona in December 2010. She lived at Van Buren Terrace until moving to the Good Samaritan Society in October of 2023. Irene’s hobbies were basketball and doing crafts which she shared with others.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, brother Everett, sister Ann Darbyshire, and brother Lyle at the age of 9. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
A private family ceremony will be held at a later date.
