College Wrestling: UNI Panthers win Cougar Clash team title with three individual champions

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Cory Land (133 pounds), Ryder Downey (165 pounds) and Wyatt Voelker (heavyweight) all rose to the top of the podium for the UNI wrestling team on Sunday, each capturing individual titles at SIU Edwardsville’s Cougar Clash at First Bank Arena.

Northern Iowa’s three champions were among 14 Panthers to earn placement in the tournament en route to a team title for the Panther Train. UNI recorded three technical fall victories, six major decisions and three falls, with the fastest coming from Jared Simma, who defeated Bronson Baxter (Little Rock) in three minutes, 43 seconds.

Land secured his title at 133 pounds after a close, high scoring match against Easton Hilton (Missouri) finishing with a 16-13 victory in the finals. Ryder Downey earned a top-ten win in the 165 pound finals over No. 8 Braeden Scoles (Illinois) with a 11-2 major decision victory, while Voelker dominated the heavyweight competition, defeating No. 8 Luke Luffman (Illinois) 8-5 in the finals.

Trever Anderson finished second at 125 pounds, as did Garret Rinken (133 pounds) who defeated 2024 NCAA champion and 20th ranked Richard Figueroa (Oklahoma State) by a 10-9 score in the quarterfinals. Jared Simma (174 pounds) also finished in second place, which included a sudden victory over No. 20 Colin Kelly (Illinois) in the semifinals.

RJ Weston secured third place at 157 pounds, while Julian Farber (133 pounds), Ethan Basile (149 pounds) and Izzy Moreno (174 pounds) all took home fourth place.

CJ Walrath (184 pounds) ended his competition in sixth place, with Brandon Paez (125 pounds), Jack Thomsen (165 pounds) and Adam Ahrendsen (285 pounds) all finishing in seventh place.
